In StratProfiles, we get to know the Stratizens — their aspirations and inspirations . We hope that, like they do, you grow your career with Stratpoint too.
Paolo Alcabao, Tech Council Lead
What did you want to be when you were young?
I wanted to be a lot of things: a doctor, a lawyer — until I found out that I really enjoyed building and coding things.
How did you end up where you are?
I started out as a Java Developer, then learned Android and other mobile frameworks. I jumped into various other web technologies, desktop, and, finally, systems architecture and design.
Why did you join Stratpoint?
Stratpoint was known in my network as a good tech company with ties to Silicon Valley. They’re always after the latest and most innovative technologies. Who wouldn’t want to be part of that?
What is IT’s role in making the world a better place?
IT is not just about the stuff that you see in sci-fi movies. Technology allows regular people to access information that will help them do their tasks more efficiently, enhance their abilities, and even save lives.
I can’t imagine life without digital wallets — I rarely even go to the bank in person anymore! And who can do without Google Meet and Zoom now, right? These technologies are not the flying cars or robots we used to imagine, but they make our lives pretty comfortable.
What I’m looking forward to seeing develop are technologies relating to better medical care. Of course, we already have centralized and secure patient records. Imagine what we can do with AI and big data to help with diagnostics and with medical research.
Given the right intention and skill, we can positively impact all aspects of our lives through tech.
What are you proud of about your job?
That we build and help others build systems that solve important problems.
Whose career do you want to emulate?
Elon Musk. Because of his unique approach and ideas to solving problems. Also because he developed various skills that would help him in his many initiatives, instead of fixating on just one thing.
If you could invent anything, what would it be?
A universal programming language. It would eliminate complexity and allow us to work on actual problems, instead of worrying about setup, compatibility, and other distractions.
Advice to younger professionals
Focus on learning and building up skills, both the technical and the soft skills. Make that investment in yourself early.
